So I’m just going to quick talk about what happened tonight, 30 April, 2012, on the eve of the May Day 2012 General Strike. I don’t know everything yet, and I’m too busy getting ready for tomorrow to really sit down and do homework. You’re getting my on the ground observations and you’re getting…

the saddest pepper plant that ever lived (and then died).

it’s true. my friend gave me a beautiful pepper plant boasting red, robust chilis and bright green healthy leaves. i’ve since repotted it and it’s shriveled into a depressed few stalks. there are a few peppers hanging on for dear life, but the sheer weight of them threatens the stability of the entire plant now. oh, it’s all just so sad. any advice on how to resurrect this little guy?

very special lemon meringue cookies.

i found this recipe on a blog run by an enthusiastic baker of delicious cute things.
meringue isn’t difficult at all, and after attempting what looks like a complicated recipe tonight, i’m wondering why i don’t just whip up some egg whites more often. this was easy and the results made me feel like a pastry badass. the delicate flavor of these sweet little nothings is sort of divine. it’s like a lemon pillow floated down from a warm spring cloud and alighted on my tongue. and the lemon curd, well… i mean, butter and sugar and lemon juice. come on.

joy’s cookie recipe called for a pastry bag and parchment paper. i substituted the bag for a ziplock baggie with the corner cut out and the parchment with a non-stick pan that required a little more scraping than these delicate little cookies deserved. que sera, etc.

still not too shabby for impromptu baking.

**and i wish my good friend, the amazing and talented katie newburn, were here to take a better picture of these little guys than i did. look at her food photography at http://www.katienewburn.com/

attention, earthlings…

there’s a satellite burning its way through the stratosphere right this minute. that’s cool, as long as it’s not headed for anywhere/one/thing i like.

“Lazily falling from space, the 12,500-pound satellite UARS on Friday headed toward an early-morning reentry somewhere over North America, Africa, or, most likely, the open ocean.” - Washington Post

android vs. apple

leaving my job means losing my toys. in preparation for my last day, i’ve had to replace a laptop, an iPhone 3GS, a mobile broadband card and a slew of other nice things i’ve grown dependent on for maximized utility. rather than whine about my shit, however, i’ve opted to replace it quickly and gracefully. i’ve applied the most efficient modes of research (Google and Amazon) and sought the advice of tech savvy friends in my search for clarity among the muddle of marketing and advertising. i’ve since purchased nice new macbook pro, negotiated my downstairs neighbor’s wifi password, and opted to forego handful of some other little things i don’t really need. the phone thing has been tough, though - tougher than i expected. i was able to narrow down my choices to the iPhone (any model) and the T-Mobile My Touch 4G.

the cost/benefit analysis broke down as follows:

iPhone 3GS…
(specs)
it’s familiar/ i already know i like it/it’ll be like nothing changed
the 3GS phone itself is available for practically nothing through ATT.com
i can transfer all of the apps i have from my work phone before returning it
i can transfer all of my contacts seamlessly
3GS apps will open and run simultaneously
it’ll plug right into my car’s installed iPod adapter
the iPhone itself is slick, fun, friendly and kind of great in general
but…
i cannot stand AT&T’s service, prices, or customer service
my current iPhone does not work in my apartment/this side of the city
AT&T no longer offers unlimited data plans to new customers
For my needs, the plan and services through AT&T (excl. the new phone price):
$120.00 +tax per month

My Touch 4G…
(specs)
basically like an iPhone with a different OS
apps that i like are just as available
the camera is far superior to one on the iPhone 3GS and has a sweet flash
i already have a T-Mobile account “on hold” from years of loyalty and i qualify for an upgrade
i love T-Mobile’s prices, service, and customer service
it has swype!
but…
the phone is an HTC and pretty google-centric, meaning everything is auto-synced for you at the touch of a button
(i wasn’t sure if that was a con or a benefit since i like full customization but also use google products extensively. eh.)
it’s only slightly bigger than an iPhone, which is really only slightly annoying
it won’t plug into my car’s adapter; i’d have to install a new one
(of course, i’ll be driving about 90% less once my job is done in october)
i’ll have to relearn an os i have literally no experience with
the My Touch won’t be instantly compatible with my new Macbook
(i do love an easy marriage)
an upgrade to the My Touch will be $99 (+taxes/fees and a rebate and is actually $200 up front)
For my needs, the plan and services through T-Mobile (excl. the upgraded phone price):
$69.00 +tax per month

all of this deliberating resulted in the upgrade to the My Touch, although I still have my iPhone until it goes back to the corporate office in october. i ended up doing it this way so that i can do a real compare/contrast and exchange the T-Mobile phone if it sucks. the reviews are great, though, and i have to admit i really like it so far. i don’t know, iPhone. we’ve had some good times, but it may be time to move on…

resigned.

tea spoon.
i resigned from my job today.

it was strange to finally release all that swelling pressure with a simple and forthright email. i worried i was being a coward by neglecting to do it in person. but then, i work remotely, so it makes sense that i’d resign remotely.

i suppose there were a number of things leading up to the decision, but ultimately, i need to be my best at school. i need to move on. and so i did, from a distance, with this sort of pounding in my head followed by an anti-climactic silence after hitting send.

now, my thoughts are of freedom. i’m not a risk-taker, and i have doubts, but i’m looking forward to doing what i love. i’m excited about putting all of my energy into the things that matter, and i’m onto something big and wonderful. i can feel it.
